The power of visual thinking

There's a tendency with modern software tools to put information in lists, and tables. Humans exist in a 3D dimensional world, and we're wired to learn things in a spatial way.

By thinking in a visual way, we can tap into this extra power in our brains. With concept maps, we can lay information out in a very visual way. We can add photos, and group ideas together meaningfully on the canvas. This helps us remember information, and make sense of ideas.

Why our brains prefer pictures

Psychologists call this the picture superiority effect - we're much more likely to remember something we saw as an image than the same thing described in words. It's closely related to dual coding theory, the idea that we process visual and verbal information through separate channels in the brain. When you combine the two, by pairing a word or idea with a picture or a spatial position, you give yourself two routes back to that memory instead of one.

Spatial memory is particularly strong. Most people can recall roughly where a fact was written on a page, or where a room was in a house they used to live in, long after they've forgotten the fact or the room's contents. Visual thinking tools work by putting that same spatial memory to work on your ideas, rather than letting it go to waste.

The problem with lists and tables

Lists and tables are great for data that's genuinely flat: names, dates, prices. But most of the ideas we actually want to think through aren't flat. They branch, they overlap, they depend on each other, and some are more important than others. Squeeze that kind of thinking into a list, and you lose the relationships. A bullet point can't easily show that one idea caused another, or that two seemingly separate concerns are actually the same underlying issue.

A spatial layout doesn't have that limitation. Proximity, grouping, and connecting lines can all carry meaning on top of the text itself, so the structure of your thinking is visible at a glance, not just the content of it.

Visual thinking in practice

This is why whiteboards fill up in meetings, why designers reach for diagrams before they reach for documents, and why sketchnoting has become popular for taking notes at talks. In each case, people are trying to capture not just what was said, but how the pieces of it fit together.
